I’m sure a lot of people thought that user-generated pseudo-democracy would be a radical, revolutionary or guerrilla idea until they came off their high horse and saw that the people using their site are, by-and-large, complete morans.

When I first arrived here the talk was already rampant about the supposed good old days and whatnot. Tango was already a rarity. There’s certainly a point to be made about moronic input and behaviour but all such points dismiss the readers and lurkers as well as many perfectly reasonable and intelligent users who still call this home(page). Tango, like others who’ve commented similiary now and again, is perhaps just bitter about the loss of what “GNN” was, for him, when the days were good and old, whenever that may have been….

Or maybe he just hit his head too hard on the matt….

if you would like to be a part of the creation of a community-driven independent news platform, we are working towards such a goal over here...

please contribute to the GCC and let us know what made GNN v1.0 so much better than GNN v2.0 so we can incorporate those qualities into the new site.

Shift – I’ve been messing around with Wordpress trying to figure out the possibilities. There are certainly some interesting ways one could envision a multiple contributor platform. That said, there’s no way to get the user-voting Headlines type functionality without a database and a more serious back end. Are you guys actually moving in this direction?

By the way if you check themes and try one of the flexible width 3-column options you may like what you see (Check Andreas04, Andreas09). You’ll have to part with the black background though….

well, train, guerrillanews.wordpress.com is not meant to replicate the gnn system, and the test platforms we are working with do allow us to move in this direction. i think the coders have a lot of flexibility. obviously many at gnn will reject any site i am instrumental in the creation of, so i am more or less staying out of this one, though i am testing and providing feedback. but i am not a programmer, coder, or web designer. if you want to write for guerrillanews.wordpress.com just send me the email addy you’re registered to wordpress under.

yea…sis answered the question to an extent…there are many posts, by myself and others, debating why this site was doomed from the start…..not to dis the efforts of steph and antonio, they have my respect for a lot of things over the years…but this little experiment just wasn’t to be.

gnn1 had some news posted by s&a and/or guest authors at times but the draw was basically a forum with various sections for members to share links to news/articles/information and then debate such posts. it had a good layout, html instead of fucktile, SEARCH CAPABILITIES!, did i mention you could search the muthfucker?, and a diverse group of members from all walks of life, social and political bents as well as a few weird species too. there was a camaraderie that came from being searchers for answers and sharers of information…like warm fuzzies.

sure, we had our share of idiots, assholes and trolls…what forum doesn’t? but it was open and for the most part unmoderated…for some stupid reason, that worked pretty well.

and chat…yea, mustn’t forget the chat window…very useful, cut down on fluff in the forum by using it as well as helping people feel a connection with each other.

the move to gnn2 found a lot to be desired…a ugly layout sorely lacking in functionality, clunky and unfamiliar formatting with textile, no chat, no search…and don’t eve get me started on the “community drive news” bit. giving points for people to post dubious shit in articles, headlines, blogs??? voting on this crap wtf was the “movement” coming to? that’s when quite a number of us old-schoolers refused to buy in to that bullshit. not to dis the ones that did work it, and some produced good work, but it went totally against the grain to many of us. it finally came to pass that those saw they were being used too..for quite a while now we have seen the devolution of the site into “vote me!” “no, vote me!” feces-slinging blogs and scouring the internet for cut ‘n paste of dubious and/or totally unsubstantiated or twisted pseudo-news that boggles the mind of anyone with the ability to read critically. s&a’s dreamed of turning the place over to the community to generate thought-provoking news articles while they went on to better things, all the time keeping the pad on the resumes..but they forgot that there is a helluva lot of noise generated before those infinite number of monkeys produce any substance from their typewriters….sad. i would have preferred it had worked, but i’m a idealistic realist, not a naive idealist

shifty, i looked at your ning site…looks like you’re trying to ride on gnn coattails. word of advice; don’t….to do so shows no vision or originality.

Pretty much, this.

I may not be 100% on board with your perspective, but you obviously are a very passionate young man with the time and drive to have quite a unique presence on the web.

Yet it seems like your new endevor is a ‘rip-off’ of GNN, down to the name and logos. Do you feel you could expand beyond this site by going in your own direction?

(Not trying to be a dick, for once, just curious as to why you’re clinging to the GNN brand, as it were)

It seems like your new endevor is a ‘rip-off’ of GNN, down to the name and logos.

anthony, stephen, et al have no patent on the word “guerrilla”

GUN was designed first and foremost as a back-up community in case of the death of GNN, and was created before the closure was officially announced.

the logos were ripped off in true pirate fashion, so whatever.

why attached to GNN? because i’ve dedicated many years to it, and i’d hate to see the legacy vanish because folks don’t want to come across as copy-cats or some shit and because the site owners aren’t willing to leave a static archive of the site up online.

if anything i’ve done should be called out for riding coat tails, it’s guerrillanews.wordpress.com, not GUN.

but if gnners don’t take up the mantle of “guerrilla news” someone else certainly eventually will, and if anything is going to carry such a name, it should be something with a legacy connected to GNN.

besides, who really was GNN? the owners, or the community?

soooo….now we got rival gnn coat tail riders? simply amazing.

and who was the gnn community? i dare say it’s more than what you’ve seen here in the last few years

give it up..it’s s&a’s site to do with as they will. go on to bigger and better things. be original. be active. be real. make a difference.

First, let me say that I’m not trying just to be insulting for the sake of it, I actually think it’s 100% awesome what you’re doing with your new site, however…

anthony, stephen, et al have no patent on the word “guerrilla”

You missed my point. I thought it would be obvious that I wasn’t talking about ripping them off or stealing in a legal sense. By borrowing so heavily from their website – their brand – it is intrinsically linked with their successes, failures and controversies.

GUN was designed first and foremost as a back-up community in case of the death of GNN, and was created before the closure was officially announced.

Gotcha.

the logos were ripped off in true pirate fashion, so whatever.

Ok, you’re a pirate. Yarr. I just figured you were more creative than that.

why attached to GNN? because i’ve dedicated many years to it, and i’d hate to see the legacy vanish because folks don’t want to come across as copy-cats or some shit and because the site owners aren’t willing to leave a static archive of the site up online.

Makes sense.

if anything i’ve done should be called out for riding coat tails, it’s guerrillanews.wordpress.com, not GUN.

Not really, the wordpress blog is more or less an archive, while the underground network is supposed to be a separate entity, even though you merely changed one word from Steven and Anthony’s website.

besides, who really was GNN? the owners, or the community?

The owners.

But anyways, I appreciate you answering my questions. Best of luck with your new site.

Don’t get me wrong here, anthony’s mother is a perfect example of an expressive person advancing the cause of progressive democratic thinking and no doubt passed this along to anthony, which likely played a part anthony’s participation in GNN.

GNN as a commercial venture is a loser.

Global warming and how your agricultural footprint impacts your carbon footprint is generating web traffic and selling books.

I for one have attempted to advance thinking in terms of global warming aka climate change and the impact of agriculture and other human activities on the Earth’s natural hydrology but am unlikely to get any grants from the Kellog foundation or accolades for these revelations and though my viewpoints for action run concurrent with those of Anna Lappe, the reasoning behind our conclusions is very dissimilar.

I’ve thought through the problem, theirs is based on belief.

Frances and Anna certainly have hearts that are in the right place but the climate change aspect for their food activism has been biased by the trace gas hysteria popularized by the MSM and they’ve missed the core issue regarding AGW. They and most of the other more than 6 billion on the planet.

The stage is now set for political action and life changing legislation that will be based primarily on a myth, that CO2 emissions are the principal factor in AGW. Those towing that line make a buck, those that buck that line closeted and silenced.

Copenhagen is going to be the beginning of real change, but emission cuts in CO2 aren’t going to have much of an impact on climate change because the problem is hydrological, not carbon based.

I don’t disagree with a single point that Anna and her mother Frances advocate regarding corporatism, organic farming and just eating and living in a better balance with the planet and our fellow living beings.

Nothing wrong with advocating reductions in CO2 emissions either, I’m all for sustainability and fossil fuels are a non renewable and increasingly precious resource that shouldn’t be wasted in the future as they’ve been in the past.

But if the real issue at hand is addressing climate change, formerly known as “global warming” we have to address the root cause, which is agriculture and agricultural irrigation and the lessor, yet substantial contributors of anthropogenic water vapor, like thermal electrical power generation, petroleum refining and urban district cooling.

Decentralization of power generation should be our primary immediate goal regarding carbon emissions. Much smaller plants can utilize far more of the “waste” heat that is currently being used to evaporate huge amounts of water to water vapor and released into the atmosphere.

The very best tool at hand to combat global warming is indeed our forks. 55 billion animals slaughtered annually all have agricultural footprints of their own and are the source/motive of/for the release of huge amounts of additional anthropogenic water vapor to the atmosphere.

Vegetarianism practiced just a few days each week would do far more than trading your car for a ten-speed bicycle. Best to do both.

Peace,

As far as I can tell, no one has really addressed my points. The concept of “archiving” the site is limited. There is a lot of content to copy and paste piece by piece. Unless someone finds a way to automatically add everything, only a very small portion will get archived.

What does get archived will have its internal linking all busted up. It will be accessible to search engines, but existing links out on the net will be broken.

It would be far better to just leave the site running statically on autopilot while taking away all the user functionality. Unless they have plans for the domain name, I don’t see the difficulty in that. Perhaps I am underestimating the size of the database holding all the content, but the textual content can’t be all that big.

And someone please tell me a logical reason they wouldn’t want to do that considering every bio about them floating around seems to mention GNN a lot. People may wonder.

Won’t they feel embarrassed at parties when some challenging person asks them, “How did you feel when you pulled the plug on ten years worth of hundreds of people’s blogs and comments and headline posts and articles? Did you think about the fact you were creating thousands of broken links on the Internet?

Isn’t it the modern equivalent of burning books? Or at least, burning magazines?

Someone please explain how my reasoning is wrong. And tell me what Anthony and Stephen and their involved associates are thinking? I find their actions totally illogical.

I guess everything’s gotta end sometime. But that doesn’t explain why it is now, when the site is still active.

Ever Wonder…....

.......why we’re now locked in a private closet soon to be deleted forever

hahaha.

But yeah. Deleting the site?

It can’t cost very much to maintain. I really think it is one of the best forums out there. Very smart people post here with very different perspectives. I’m sure the “butterfly effect“of gnn is (or at least has been) powerful. It’s changed the direction my activism has taken, as I’m sure it has for others. Real life activism on real life important issues.

Like I’ve said recently, the internet is most likely going to change the world in powerful and dramatic ways in the near future, as it’s doing right now. The slaves can talk to each other these days, and slaves that can communicate freely amongst themselves without reprisal get uppity.

I don’t see the issue of GNN.tv being open or closed as being about padding resumes or the continuity of a community, though there is that.

A lot of 9-11 activists credit GNN in part with their activism. I do. Jason Bermas does. Maybe we’re wrong, and we owe George Bush an apology. Maybe we’re proven right some day, in which case this site becomes a footnote to history. Statues and coins history.

This is one of the most interesting periods in human history. Things are moving faster than ever. Some day, historians and sociologists are going to want to understand what people were thinking in the period of transition. Honestly, are there any other sites like GNN? By this, I mean, are there any other discussion forums where the only common denominator is that nearly everyone is a radical in some sense?

I’m not sure there are. There are plenty of echo chambers where people from this continent and of that ideology discuss these types of issues, but nothing really like this. And I think the historians of the future will be curious as to what it looked like when, for the first time in human history, radical jackasses could communicate freely with each other all over the world in real time in response to the instant global coverage of world events.

I’ll be the first to admit that this site looks pretty stupid up close, and that Karl Marx died poor and obscure and that George Orwell probably seemed like a huge loser when he was a homeless beggar in London.

Don’t throw away your chance to be Engels, S & A.
