I need some new CSS code to hide the new adds (the book and the “Advertise with GNN”) for my blog.

Tango??

Anyone??

Please…

div #adspotBox.mod { display: none;
}

That should do it.

Sorry Monk – just caught this. Glad Rich could help.

I just used this:

.adspot { display: none; }

Anyone else who needs a bit of CSS help, always feel free to PM me.

This is a recent response to a question about CSS from Partisano that may help others:

CSS is based on HTML – so you need to know the code of your blog page. to do this, you need to select view —> view source code from the browser menu and take a look at how the page is written.

Some parts of your blog are written as a “division” which means it is able to be altered by CSS. There exists a hierarchy of divisions that may pose some philosophical issues for you commies and anarchists out there.

Focus on the divisions in your HTML that are either a “class” or an “ID” – (ID being higher in ranking than a Class – if there is a class embedded in an ID, any changes you make to the ID will be implemented in the class – hence the Cascade part of cascading style sheet (CSS)).

For example, if you wanted to modify the top bar you would find where the “page_id” command is written (which is what that top bar is called – you’ll find your G# there).

The “div” means it’s the start of a new division, the “id” means it’s an “ID” and the “h1” means that it is written as the first headline style. You can change anything you want about this. The background color, the border, the size, and lots more. The most fun thing to do is to add your own image.

So in order to write CSS you need to know a couple easy commands. You can go here: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp for a full listing.

anything that is an “ID” has to start with #, anything that is a “class” has to start with . (<— that’s a period). Then write the name of the division, followed by a {

So to highlight your page_id, start with: # page_id {

Next, you will need to define your attributes. For the background image, you’ll want to signify you’re using a picture on the web, which is all we can use. It would be a good idea to get a photobucket.com account if you will be heavily altering your page. Here’s the code for that:

background-image: url(‘picture file here’);

You’ll probably want to change other attributes as well. Check out how Shifty did it:

#page_id {
clear: both;
display: block;
width: 548px;
height: 106px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-color: #ffffff;
background-image: url(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/blogstripmedium6.jpg);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

(**notice: remember the closing bracket “}” at the end)

Anyways, try using his for starters with your own image, and play around with the various attributes to get an idea of how they work. Enter the final CSS in the CSS field on your site profile. If you ever need to find out how to do anything in particular, check out other people’s sites. I recommend namaste_rich’s blog – that dude knows his CSS coding.

As far as killing those ads – I’m sure Anthony would appreciate keeping them, but if you have to this will get rid of them:

#ad-bg { display: none; }

#ad-store { display: none; }

#ad-true_lies { display: none; }

#ad-sw { display:none; }

div#google_ads { display: none; }

div#journalism_fund { display: none;}

div#ad-josh { display: none; }

#ab_banner { display: none; }

.adspot { display: none; }

#right_ads { display: none; }

For Firefox users, it is highly recommended that you download the Web Developer extension. It was recently updated too. Now when you click on the “CSS” drop down, check “Edit CSS” and “View Style Information” and mouse over the sections of your blog page – it will highlight and display the specific code instantly. Very useful update.

Nice job, T.

/me is ad free.

alrighty then

I downloaded the Web Developer extension. (that’s good right ? ) :p

I checked “Edit CSS”
no problem, but when I attempted the same with “View Style Information” a window comes up… “This feature requires the DOM Inspector to be installed”

with this link provided in the window…

the info on that page is a bit much for me at first glance, anyone able to simplify what it says/means ?

Apparently when you originally downloaded Firefox you didn’t download the “developer tools” stuff with it. If you don’t already have 1.5 you can just go ahead and check the appropriate boxes when you get it, otherwise I guess their recommendation that you reinstall the program is what you may have to do.

I will say that the “View Style Information” tool is highly useful, it replaces your mouse cursor with a little crosshairs and the info bar at the bottom of the screen then gives the code info for whatever style element you’re pointing at. For example, the Battleground ad says:

html > body > div #wrapper >div #framework > div #left > div #ad-bg .mod > a > img

...which is useful in determining how to block it.

is there a way to ban all the adds forever on the left side of my blog page? i don’t want to keep adding code for every new add

i don’t really mind the stuff on the right, but all the adds on the left just screw up tango’s nifty coding of my blog (thnx again, dude!)

check out the bullets on the right hand side of my blog page

it was done with

#right_ads {
display: block;
background-image: url(‘http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/bulletz.gif’);
background-color: transparent !important;
visibility: visible !important;
repeat: y-repeat;
height: 13000px;
width: 165px;
}

so i thought i could do the opposite in the left column, but it didn’t work:

#left_ads {
display: block;
background-image: url(‘http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/whitebulletz.gif’);
background-color: transparent !important;
visibility: visible !important;
repeat: y-repeat;
height: 13000px;
width: 165px;
}

can anyone help me out with code to put the white bullets on the left hand column?

R267792

i dont think #left_ads is an element, i think you would have to use #left #ad-rev or some of the other ads code, but im not sure

try this:

#ad-rev {
display: block;
position: relative;
margin-bottom: 0px;

repeat: y-repeat;
height: 13000px;
width: 165px;

}

thanks agu, that worked great, though i took the last part off so the ad still shows.

one more thing. the images seems to be repeating itself horizontally, and a bit of the butt of the bullets shows in the white ones. i messed with the width and it didn’t seem to change a damn thing for some reason. take a look and see what you think. right now it’s down from 165 to 100 and i don’t see a difference. with the black ones on the right, changing the width worked just fine.

youll have to change the height, try changing repeat: y-repeat; for: background-repeat: repeat-x so it should be like this

#ad-rev {
display: block;
position: relative;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-color: transparent;
background-image:
url(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/whitebulletz.gif);
background-repeat: repeat-x
height: 13000px;
width: 165px;
}

damnit! i just wasted about an hour making this sick column collage of photos, and i made it at 160 pix on Photoshop, but then when i uploaded it to the web, it was tiny as hell. then i reopened it in Photoshop and it was tiny there too. fuck beans. when i inserted it where the white bullet url is above there were three of every photo, instead of one. so i guess i have to go back and make it three times bigger, or 480 pix wide. i tried to just enlarge it, but it decreased the image quality = O (

forget all that for now though.

all i want right now is to make the white bullets not repeat horizontally like that, and to have both white and black normall end right down where the friends list ends (which is how i have it), but to repeat if the blog is longer than that.

R267865

165px should have worked, because i had to size it right when i did it with the black ones, and 165 was the magic number. right now it just seems to be ignoring that or something.

Just use the .png file I gave you with the transparent background (or if you want I can cut out the background of your current file with the magic wand tool in PS, save it as a .gif or .png and re-post – it’s up to you).

how do i get rid of that?”

Same way I showed you for the left-hand bullets – add the ‘repeat-y’ property to the background. This will prevent the x repeat that you’re seeing:

#right_ads {
display: block;
background: transparent !important url(‘http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i15/tangodurden/bulletsforshifty3-1.png’) repeat-y;
visibility: visible !important;
height: 13000px;

Also if they do, can someone post the CSS code here?

R294810
3 years ago
ShiftShapers

i have no idea. you’re free to experiment with them. there’s a black version, and a white verson. the url’s are:

white: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/whitebulletz.gif
black: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/bulletz.gif

the code i am using:

#right_ads {
background: transparent url(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/bulletz.gif) repeat-y;
visibility: visible !important;
height: 13125px;
width: 165px;
}

#adspotBox {
display: block;
background: transparent
url(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y71/ShiftShapers/whitebulletz.gif)
repeat-y;
height: 13500px;
width: 100px;
}

you can mess with the height/width to get it how you want, or switch one url to the other side (left/right), etc.

also the black of the black bullets is slightly off from the background black of GNN, so you’ll have to mess with the colors if you want them to match exactly.

If you check out Liam’s CSS (which he stole from Burning Monk) that I did (again, for Monk) – you’ll see a modified Yard image (I shrunk it down to fit the layout).

Sure, i could simply make bigger jpgs to use more than 3 frames for my comics, but what I would really like to do is use multiple jpgs in the space…

I cannot do that. Can you tell me how to do that? I would need to put a top one, a middle one and a bottom one to get my 9 frames in… so 3 jpgs stacked.

First one to tell me how wins my undying gratitude until someone does something even more spectacular for me…

Good god man, please tell me he’s not eating Woodstock… that’s just…just wrong. Heh, so I feel better, I’m going to think its Harriet and Oliver….

Truth, I really don’t see an easy way to do it. If I’m reading you right, you want to use the same amount of header space for 9 frames as you do with your usual 3 frames? It’s a dilemma because there’s not enough site assets available on the page to substitute for jpegs (you could use the ads to substitute). I think it will end up looking like what you have now though.

The only way I can see it working is make an animated gif – fading out/in the frames in sequence.

Or – you could also use a “hover” command for the “Page ID”, so when you mouse over the jpeg – the entire comic appears as it does now. When the cursor leaves the comic area, the page goes back to normal.

Replace your current #page id CSS with this code to see for yourself:

#page_id {
clear: both;
display: block;
width: 548px;
height: 150px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-color: #ffffff;
background-image: url(http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii2/truthcansuck/14d.jpg);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

#page_id:hover {
clear: both;
display: block;
width: 548px;
height: 500px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
background-color: #ffffff;
background-image: url(http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii2/truthcansuck/14d.jpg);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

anyone got ideas for how i could get the transparent, right side control panel on my page to appear underneath the “friends” list on the left side?

the one with the yard, control panel, profile link, etc

No, although those are awesome and everyone should like the person who did them because he is obviously a genius. Whoever he is.

Toad, do you want the yard controls fully lit or transparent, as it is now?

Hey Rich, I noticed that my blogs get cut off in Internet Explorer but yours don’t. Got any idea on what could fix it?

Rich, either way really – fully lit might match the rest of the layout better

thanks in advance for your help!

Is there a way to get a random gif out of a number of selections to show up in an area, or does it have to be one?

For instance, say i had 30 jpgs on photobucket, say ‘naked pictures of Troof 1 through 30’ and wanted to show them randomly in the top right ‘yard’ box? Any code for that?

Hi Shifty,

1st option:

body {
margin-top: 100px;
margin-left: 100px;
background: black url(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Zuzii37VUO4/Rl8mZ5ya1rI/AAAAAAAABtU/CQCfP3_xXUs/s1600/body.gif);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

#yard img { display: none;
}

#control img {
display: none;
}

#control #user img {
display: inline;
width: 80px;
height: 54px;
}

#ad-bg {
display: none;
}

#ad-store {
display: none;
}

#ad-true_lies {
display: none;
}

#site_info {
display: none;
}

#content .clearfix { display: none; }

———————

2nd option:

body {
background: black url(http://beltainesfire.com/wp-content/themes/liberty/img/background.jpg);
background-repeat: repeat-y;
background-position: 150px 160px;
}

Play around with those, if you want.
